When the People Closest to You Don’t Support Your Dreams…

“You don’t think she’s actually gonna do that, do you? Like what is she even thinking??”

It was September of 2018.

I overheard my friend saying this to someone else I knew in an extremely condescending & judgmental way — about the idea I had to travel to 50 states and film a documentary on happiness + fulfillment.

The thing is — the comment didn’t surprise me.

Yes, it hurt.

It stung.

I felt sad.

But it didn’t surprise me.

A perspective I heard a long time ago was:

“When you’re making a change in your life, the people closest to you will normally be the last people fully on board with this change…because they’re so used to seeing you in a certain light.

Don’t let their opinions or reactions discourage you from bringing your vision to life.”

For a long time, I felt judged by some of the people closest to me.

(In fact, this was a major shift last year for me in re-evaluating certain friendships — and sparked the idea for Boston Babes Social Club).

I was seeking their external validation — when I deep down I knew I would never get it.

I dimmed down the joy and the excitement I had for what was happening in my life when I was around them — because I knew whatever I shared would be met with unsupportive comments, fake smiles, and an underlying current of judgment.

Letting other people’s opinions and judgments infiltrate your own dreams, goals, and intentions can be a dangerous thing - especially when you’re approaching your life differently than the norm.

They can be the reason your dreams fizzle out — or you can choose to turn the microphone down on unsupportive comments and remain true to yourself.

This is a strong focus for many of my private clients as they craft and create the life they truly want.

You’re here to do life in your own way.

You’re here to bring your unique perspective and approach to every day. Only you know what’s truly best for you.

I don’t typically consider myself a people pleaser — but in this way I was…

Because I was abandoning myself every time I was in a conversation with this person.

If you can resonate with this, I’m sharing more about my struggles and the shifts I’m continuing to make in order to improve this area of life in today’s Lifestyle Rebellion podcast.
